Mosaica's Mango Madness Marathon
To celebrate mango season we've gone mango mad today at school! Here are some song lyrics re-written to be mango themed!
Poetry Month
Norah and Avyay read the poem 'The Tyger':
Found Poems: (poems using only found words)
This poem (above) was written by Saurya using StoryBird. Isn't it awesome?
April is Poetry Month at school. This week we're learning the poem 'The Tyger' by William Blake. We've been practicing reading it aloud as well as editing it to help us understand the the meaning and recognize the rhyme scheme.
The Tyger, by William Blake
Tyger! Tyger! burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare sieze the fire?
And what shoulder, & what art.
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand? & what dread feet?
What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?
When the stars threw down their spears,
And watered heaven with their tears,
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee?
Tyger! Tyger! burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?
Paragon Night: Video for Unit 6
Today is Paragon Night 6! We're so excited :)
For this Paragon Night we have made a video showing some of the work we have been doing in class for the past 4 weeks. We've been studying the essential question 'How do Individuals Shape Culture?'. Click below to watch our video:
We used the song 'Proud' by Heather Small because it connected to character strengths and shaping how we think, just like our unit did!
Holi Celebrations - STEAM Water Mazes - March 2015
For Holi this year we celebrated with a STEAM project. Our challenge was clear; create a water maze using recycled materials. Once each team had finished building it was time for the most exciting part - pouring colorful water through our mazes to see which was the best. We later made a video to show what we had done:
Paragon Night Book Auction - February 2015
We finally got to auction our books this Friday. We each had to make a short sales pitch to the audience to convince them to buy our book. To make the pitch we stood inside a hula hoop and had 25 seconds to speak, when our time was up the next person (carefully) pushed us out the way! It was a lot of fun and we raised lots of money for our roof garden during the auction!
Book Writing Project - February 2015
The last 4 weeks we have been really busy planning, writing and editing our own books. We had to write a story about an adventurer to connect it to our Paragon units about explorers in the Old World and the New World. Our stories had to have a clear structure, exciting plot and be edited carefully by ourselves, a classmate and our teacher.
On Friday we will make a short book pitch to our parents before a silent auction. We are hoping that all our hard work will pay off and our books will sell - especially since they are special edition signed copies!
Building a 17th Century America Fort
In Paragon we have been learning about trade and exploration in the New World. We will be telling you how we made a 17 century fort. First we need:-
· polystyrene
· Glue
· toothpicks
· paint (green and brown)
· chopsticks
· scissors
· cardboard boxes
· paintbrushes
· tissue (for cleaning up messes)
· a tissue roll
· Permanent markers
· Paper
· Plastic boxes (to hold the glue)
This is how we made it:-
1. We drew the plan on a piece of polystyrene
2. Then we made blockhouses out of the cardboard then painted them and waited them to dry
3. Next we made the roof for the blockhouses
4. After that, we made fences out of toothpicks and popsicle sticks
5. We made a spiky log by putting toothpicks inside an empty tissue roll
6. For the final touch, we stuck everything to the board of polystyrene
Hope you like the structure!
Book Fair - February 2015
This week the Scholastic Book Fair has come to our school for the first time. It has been really exciting to see all the different books for sale and many of us have found some new books or series to fall in love with reading! Our class reads a lot so we've spent plenty of time visiting the book fair and sharing recommendations with each other.
Trip to Birla Science Museum and Planetarium - February 2015
Our class went on a trip with Grades 1, 4 and 5 to the science museum and planetarium. It was great fun! We got to try lots of science experiments that taught us about things like air pressure, forces and motion. We also went to the planetarium and watched a special show about the exploration of Mars. Here are some pictures from our trip:
Skype with the UK - January 2015
Today we skyped with a school in the UK. Heron Park is another Mosaica school in Eastbourne, England. We asked them questions about things like their school, life in school and in the UK. It was fun to talk to them and to learn about the similarities and differences between our schools and the countries we live in.
Next we're going to swap photos of the places we live and the city around us. After that. we'll skype again - we can't wait!
Trap the Teacher! - January 2015
Today Grade 2-3 were trying to trap Mrs. Emma in the classroom... while also doing what they were supposed to. They used spelling words to block the door by writing on the floor using white board markers. Since they had small feet they could get out but Mrs. Emma couldn't. Here is a video of them.
Compass Learning Odyssey
Grade 2-3 have been working on compass to learn more stuff or new things. They also use compass to practice all their work for their studies or tests. Compass has subjects such as La extinctions, Math, Science, Language arts, and Social studies. Compass has been teaching all students of grade 2 and 3 lots of new stuff recently and are working very hard, sometimes we have this for homework. Mrs. Emma has been giving us quiz’s activities that give us quizzes and lesson quizzes. That was all the great work of grade 2-3 on compass until now.
Scantron Testing - January 2015
Grades 2 and 3 have been working on scantron. Scantron is basically an exam for us. We do scantron because it’s a test we have to do so our teacher (Mrs. Emma) can see how much we learned. We do scantron at the beginning and the end of the year. Scantron is the most tiring test in the whole wide world (seriously the most boring one) but is still does help the kids learn. There are many different subjects in scantron the most boring one is reading foundations (so many boring books!)I just hate scantron! The best subject is math. Because math is very easy and fun. ELA is the 2nd easiest , reading is the 3rd easiest and science is the 2nd worse.
Paragon Night: Unit 4, January 2015
This Paragon Night was mostly about drama. Grade 2-3 did presentations about the explorers Christopher Columbus, Ferdinand Magellan, and Bartholomew Dias of the Renaissance. Grade 4-5 did a quiz on who was Queen Elizabeth the 1st, Martin Luther and William Shakespeare. And Grade 1 did a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) episode.
